Welcome to November! We hope you had a fun Halloween! Fall is winding down and it's time for... rain? Apparently yes, because storms and generally gloomy, chilly days are to follow here on Iniidae. And by 'chilly' we mean it's dipping down into the 60° F (15° C) at times. Oh the horror. This month the focus is on exploring these murky depths in search of answers.
As a note the player cap was indeed raised to 55 so enjoy!
Become Captain Nemo
With all the strange happenings and problems that face the crew, URSULA has decided to take a proactive approach and send the crew out exploring to understand their surroundings better. She'd rather they know what they're facing and all the knowledge they can get will help. To this end she's chosen a biome bordering the Monolith.
The Grand Reef is a beautiful area full of new mysteries and perhaps even some answers! But we can't know for certain until we dive into the depths here. Though darker and deeper than most areas, it has precious lighting given off by strange, bioluminescent pods and plants. Given the depths, it's best to wear your wetsuit and take some vehicles for any exploring.
Three new creatures can be spotted here as follows:
Jellyrays are as frequent as fish in the Grand Reef and swim in large, glowing flocks. They are, luckily, docile creatures that will allow you to swim with them and even touch them if you like. They seem attracted to light.
Crabsquids are also attracted to light but you probably don't want to attract them, considering they're aggressive hunters. They are capable of unleashing EMP blasts that can disable electronics in the area, so be careful with your things!
Sea Treaders are the elephants of the sea. They use their long snouts as a third foot and graze as they walk. While the large adults seem safe, the young are probably targets for Crabsquids and other creatures. They're a constantly migrating species.
Of course just because URSULA chose this spot doesn't mean you can't explore other areas! In fact there may be quite a lot to find still so it's up to you how to spend your exploration.
It's worth noting that until recently the area had quite a few Reaper Leviathans but they seem to be gone...
Some of the updates mentioned here, along with a few others, have been added to the Biome and Base posts. As mods we don't manage the player-run Subnautica discovery document but we encourage everyone to use the document for details that aren't included on the Biome and Base posts.
BIOMES
The Monolith is no longer flashing different colored lights. It, however, lacks any lights at all now. Please bring a flashlight the next time you visit.
A new area known as the Sparse Reef has been discovered. It is completely barren and is a possible good location for terraforming. Hint hint. Also, several crew members have been checking out locations on a map. So far they have traveled to an underwater area at Mountain Island where they discovered that a previous crew had been searching for something.
BASE
An ice rink that also doubles as a normal skating rink is now at the base. Other new additions include a lot of skeleton robots that may be line dancing at any given time, the expansion of the Magister's tank to reach across the entire base, and two of the healing/sleep pods from the monolith that are now in the med bay.
TECH
A few crew members are building a new submersible in order to gain access to both the area below the lava veins, which several missions have pointed to as a potentially key area, as well as to continue searching the others markers on the map that was found on Amity Island. The sub is still not completed yet.
There is now a scanner in the labs that functions as a portable microscope and database that can better identify living tissues in items you examine. The more the crew adds to the database, the more exact it will become. URSULA's life detection system has also been upgraded via using drone as signal relays.
TOURISTS
A cargo ship known as the Sunbeam has seen the distress beacon (more commonly known as the flashing lights) that the Monolith has sent out. The base has sent out a message to it and the Sunbeam responded, giving information on the war with the Kharaa, a picture of Iniidae from space, and other things. They are still outside of the orbit of the planet and are waiting for a second response.
ANIMALS AND ALIENS
The egg that Komaeda and Undyne received has hatched into a beautiful baby reaper! Outside of the base, the Kharaa population is slowly being introduced to crew members by Dave. The Kharaa now know how to line dance and play twister, on top of already knowing how to rap and plant apple trees. This info on the Kharaa is still unknown to the majority of the crew until Dave, who discovered them, decides to inform the rest of the base.
HORRORTERRORS
You may have noticed that the nightmares that were plaguing the crew earlier in October stopped! It's all thanks to Sorey and Mikleo, who battled the Sea Dragon in the Dreamscape. They didn't defeat it, but they did manage to drive it back and to stop causing the nightmares. It appeared to be in a weakened and tired state already at the time of the confrontation.
FOOD
A few new items at the base's menu includes marshmallows, multiple kinds of candy, and burgers. Like all things made from the resources on Iniidae, they don't taste exactly the same as their Earth counterparts, but it's better than nothing! Somehow no one has managed to figure out cheese yet. More scavenging the Aurora has uncovered seeds for growing lettuce, sweet potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The Sunbeam has also given them more junk food as well as vitamin fruit snacks. There is also very, very, very hot sauce. Be careful!
Remember you're also free to explore and do whatever you wish and can ask us about your own mission objectives as well.
MAIN MISSION: GRASSHOPPER AND THE ANT
URSULA SAYS:"Naoko has left us a message! She says: It looks like this planet has a rainy season. Great. Well since we just have a little shelter and a small farm, could you guys lend us a hand? We need supplies. I'm not picky on what. Wood, ore, metals, food, whatever. The more variety the better. Thanks."
REQUIREMENTS: Not everything Naoko's looking for can be found in the usual scavenging spots so it might be worth looking around some new areas.
RESULTS: Naoko might be willing to share some special information.
SIDE MISSION: BORED TWENTYSOMETHING
URSULA SAYS: "She also passed along a second message from Jenn: Hi everyone! I'm kind of totally bored and going out of my mind over here? But I've got a secret stash of shit that I can share if you guys can help me. How do you not go crazy seriously? Uh, thanks in advance for whatever you can do!"
REQUIREMENTS: How do you entertain a bored twnetysomething? Well most of the base has probably the same mentality as her so it's worth a try, right?
RESULTS: Junk food and easily re-hydrated fast food! Maybe a few toys. Who knows.
Mission: Void Therapy Characters: Sorey, Mikleo Details: They're gonna go INTO THE VOID once their ability to enter the dreamscape comes back and PLAY WITH THE CUTE FISH MORE if they're there and also DO A SIT-DOWN WITH THE EMPEROR. They'll ask if she wants them to try to make her feel better with purification; if she says no they're fine just staying with her for a while and feelings communing with her soothingly and letting her know they're trying to track down her kids. Sorey wants to tell her stories and use the malleability of the dreamscape to sort of make a play of them for her to look at! He figures she must be really bored down there so maybe if they keep her company every now and then it'll help with her illness.
Mission: The Grand Reef Adventure Characters: Alisha, Chihiro, Sorey, Mikleo, Percy, Fi, whoever wants Details: This little group's gonna make a foray into the Grand Reef now that the Reapers are gone! They'll keep an eye out for resources the base/Naoko could use but their focus is more on looking for clues as to the Emperor's kids' whereabouts. PERCY CAN TALK TO FISH WITHOUT HAVING TO DREAMSCAPE so they can introduce themselves, and ask about baby Emperors more directly.
The Zesties will also be looking for signs of Rose while they're out and about -- while they're obviously not gonna find her, they'll be keeping a sharp eye out for general signs of the manmade and checking with the fish if they've seen any humans/weird nonnatives around lately.
Fi also has an ability called "dowsing" which is like magical radar for whatever item she chooses to focus on, and they can try to use that to find baby Emperors!
We think it's sweet that Sorey's group always tries so hard for the sea life.
> The Cute Fish always want to play! Especially right now. With the sea dragon so cranky, they're feeling down. To them, it's like having a sick family member. Which is apparently what they consider the sea dragon to be: family. If questioned, they'll explain that it smells like they smell, so they naturally consider it family. In turn, the sea dragon never harms them and will even protect them.
> With the Sea Emperor, she'll agree to the purification once its explained to her. Although she's still anxious about the process. Purifying her will help with some of her feelings and make it easier for her to communicate with them in something closer to 'sentences' instead of the broken words they might usually hear.
> Because they've put her in a better mood with their stories and help, she'll share some more about herself with them. She'll come close enough that they can see strange scar patterns all over her body. Once there were things in the ocean that did this to her to make her live forever. She doesn't know why they did it and put her here but she remembers it, even if it was very long ago.
> While they won't find the Emperor's children or Rose, they will at least have luck with something manmade! It's another abandoned base from the crew of the Degasi.
> Two audio logs can be found that give a better picture of the situation of the Degasi survivors.
> BART: Stop it, both of you! We're sick. MARGUERIT: What? PAUL: How? BART: You've been coughing, right? Feeling itchy? MARGUERIT: Yeah. PAUL: The suit biometrics would have warned us. BART: It's something new. MARGUERIT: Spit it out then, are we gonna throw up our insides, dissolve into slime, what? BART: I don't know. If I can isolate the bacteria in our blood then I could test its effect on our live specimens. MARGUERIT: And if it turns them inside out? You got a fix for that? BART: Not at this time, no. PAUL: You have my full faith, son.
> The other log details an event.
*Sound of hatch closing* CPU: Marguerit Maida has boarded the habitat. PAUL: What are you so happy about, Maida? MARGUERIT: Say, kid?! I brought you something. PAUL: Is that a leviathan?! MARGUERIT: Towed it home on the back of the sub. BART: You KILLED it? MARGUERIT: It's still breathing. I was about to finish the job. Pass me that hardened knife. PAUL: Are you out of your mind?! You brought that thing HERE?! What if others come?! MARGUERIT: You rather it got curious and came of its own accord, or got messed up and dragged here? PAUL: When we get off this planet I am going to drag you through every court in the damn empire!
> Judging from the size of the mandibles left behind from her prize, it was likely a baby Reaper Leviathan measuring somewhere in the range of 15 feet.
> Locked in one of the desks is a very odd object made of an unknown metal. It's roughly the size of a dinner plate.
> The usual small armory can be found, now featuring many knives made from the teeth of a Reaper Leviathan. Several heavy duty plasma guns can also be found, along with homemade bombs with remote detonation controls. Drones made to carry these bombs can also be found.
> In various luggage and storage crates, other items can be found. Scarves, cans of specially sealed donut treats (look and taste just like real donuts!), sweaters (some very tacky), coloring books with watercolor pencils, jigsaw puzzles, a plush stuffed animal of a fox, various adventure themed fiction books, digital sketchpads of various ocean life and tons of still well preserved reaper meat.
> According to the fish in the area, the Degasi crew hasn't been gone from this place long but something very large attacked them. They think one may have made it to the water that flows below but what that means is unknown.
> Fi's ability will help find several spiritual hotspots in the area and one massive one that is located even deeper than the grand reef. It is likely the water flowing below that the fish mentioned. A sub will be needed for this area.
- Since Valentine's scanning the area in/around the abandoned Degasi base with the microbial scanner, would it pick anything up?
- The crew's bringing the weird object back to the base -- would URSULA be able to give them more information on what it might be / might be used for?
- Could the Reaper knives be spell-infused in the same way as Reaper bone and other parts, or are there nonnative material parts in them that get in the way?
- Valentine will be able to pick up large amounts of the bacteria from the Jelly Shroom caves, meaning that's definitely the illness they suffered from.
- URSULA will be very curious about the odd object. She won't be able to read the writing on it, suggesting it's not a language known to humans. Although she can't begin to guess what it's for, she suspects it's a part of something rather than a finished product on its own. She'll suggest the crew keep an eye out for these. Maybe it's like a puzzle!
- They can indeed be spell-infused! They're very handy.
It does in fact have a sort of electronic signature that Ami can access! The code, however, is beyond anything she's seen before. It is inhuman in nature but some things can be deciphered from the nature of the signature. She'll be able to tell it's meant to open something and is only one part of the opening function.
