Happy New Year, everyone! Did you make an resolutions? We hope this year is full of fun and wonderful things for everyone! As for us, we hope to continue bringing you a great RP experience.
On the base, the temperature at night is becoming a more respectable 44°F (that's about 6°C) so at least URSULA is slowly easing up? But it's still 'winter' and she thinks it should be a little chilly. Oh well.
Out of the Corner of Your Eye
You spot him. But it's not Shia LaBeouf.
From January 1st to the 11thstrange creatures can be spotted throughout all biomes, including around the base. Anywhere there is water, up to and including the larger on-base aquariums. They'll appear and disappear with ease and can be seen generally lurking about, sometimes watching from a distance but turn your back and they'll be gone. Sometimes you may only think you saw something moving or feel watched but you won't be able to find the source. At the least they seem harmless enough despite being creepy.
Starting on the 12th something will change with them. Based on character investigation...
Sadly that isn't an alien hug! The creatures have designated the crew contaminated and are engaging quarantine protocol.
Characters who enter any area of water big enough for the creatures can be targeted for quarantine. They may not always attack everyone so some trips may be safe, but it's always possible! If they find someone they'll shoot a teleportation orb at them. Anyone who gets hit will have a familiar feeling of drowning and will wake up in the containment pods and terrariums in the Lost River Precursor Base. Some may even end up in the containment aquariums by mistake! The creatures are not very smart.
Characters can break out of containment when caught, but after doing so the creatures will act increasingly aggressive towards them. They'll first try to injure them to keep them docile and send them back to containment. If characters still resist the creatures they'll start actively trying to kill characters and deposit their corpses in the Lost River's acid.
Characters who had the Jellyshroom sickness are most likely to be targeted but anyone could be considered a potential target for quarantine. From an OOC perspective, you are free not to have your character attacked! ICly however anyone is a possible target and the creatures want to contain everyone on the base.
On the 13th, barrier was established around the base island to keep the Warpers from coming inside. The portals they tried to shoot into the barrier were contained and sent out to annoy them.
On the 22nd, travelers to the planet's soul got the planet to agree to make the Warpers retreat. The planet also sent its warmth to spread over everyone on the crew. The crew will seem to hear the Song for the moment when the planet's acceptance washes over them.
Some of the updates mentioned here, along with a few others, have been added to the Biome and Base posts. As mods we don't manage the player-run Subnautica discovery document but we encourage everyone to use the document for details that aren't included on the Biome and Base posts.
BIOMES
The Lost River has been discovered. Home to a highly acidic river, massive skeletons of an ancient Sea Dragon race, and other seemingly spooky landmarks, it is probably not the best place to have a picnic! There is also an abandoned base that was built by an alien species. It has been heavily damaged, but is still explorable. When it was in use, it seemed to be a disease research facility.
BASE
Due to an unfortunate incident with a bomb, the base's security has been upgraded. The upgrades include upgraded locks for biometrics (handprints) and voice activation. There is also an option for a physical key; zoned the base for 'Sensitive Areas' which is currently the weapons room but will come to include URSULA's servers. At present, the Sensitive Area Access List only bans Komaeda from weapons. Everyone is on it by default, and a three person vote from 'senior Altera Science Group' members is required to remove someone at present. URSULA's security has also been dramatically upgraded to make her harder to get into.
The crew can now enjoy kotatsu to help fight that winter chill! URSULA recommends sitting under them with that special someone. And possibly the most important update of all, but the Magister no longer lives in the aquarium on base. There is also now milk, so the infamous Cheesequest is over.
BASE ISLAND Over on the base island, a ferris wheel has been built, as well as a Japanese styled shrine and one of the watchtowers from Annabeth's plans. Dave has moved into it however, and has limited the access to the tower to just himself. The ground floor of the base on the island has also had construction started on it. The flower garden has also been worked on so it is much more impressive and beautiful now. The island is also now filled with tinkerbulls. Enjoy!
URSULA
As touched upon above, but the other half of URSULA's servers have finally been found. They are currently slowly being transferred over to a new location. Once completed, she should have a much better processing power and other perks! Also if you had given her a gift for Christmas, you will see her with it constantly while in her robot form. She loves them all and she also loves you all very, very much.
NARCISSUS
The Narcissus had been a military cargo ship before it was hijacked by the Kharaa. It seems like what attracted them to Iniidae was "ship-like activity" that they picked up on while passing through the area. What actually caused that activity is unknown. The radiation leak has also been stopped, which means that everyone is slightly less likely to die a horrible death now.
KHARAA
All of the hostile Kharaa that were on the Narcissus have been eradicated, as well as their hives. All of the non-hostile ones have been moved to P Diddy's island to live with the other friendly Kharaa. Soon, they will be rapping and drinking apple juice as well! There is one (non-aggressive) Kharaa on the base, though its existence is being kept a secret for now.
CASTAWAYS
If you go to Mountain Island to visit Naoko's group, you'll see a new face. Nancy, another scientist, was found stranded on the planet and was taken to the other survivors to stay with. Feel free to attempt to talk to her, but be warned that she isn't as friendly as Naoko, and thus is more tight-lipped about giving out information. There is also now a direct line to Naoko via Mikleo's baby AI, DUG.
Remember you're also free to explore and do whatever you wish and can ask us about your own mission objectives as well.
MAIN MISSION: ALIEN ARTIFACTS
URSULA SAYS:"It's exciting and a little... unnerving to think there have been aliens right under us this whole time. I think it warrants a full investigation. Let's comb the biomes for any traces of them."
REQUIREMENTS: Explore the biomes and get ready for deeper dives under the sea!
RESULTS: Perhaps we'll learn more about these aliens.
SIDE MISSION: CARING NEIGHBORS
URSULA SAYS: "Oh! It seems that Cave Crawlers have killed off a few Birdog couples... It's tragic but it means their eggs have been abandoned. Usually, I wouldn't interfere but... why don't we help them? Just this once."
REQUIREMENTS: Protect and raise three nests of birdogs by any means necessary.
RESULTS: URSULA will be happy to see everyone working together with the wildlife.
Abashedly and belatedly, I realized I never gave a specific date for Hotaru's canon update when I PMed and am unsure if you need it? If it's all right, I'd like to set it for Januarary 7th?
Additionally, would Hotaru be able to receive any kind of precognition in regards to the strange creatures? Do they have the potential to be worse than creepy?
this is tied more towards valentine's investigations on the sea dragon and its disease - is the enzyme extractable from the native creatures, and if so can it be sequenced?

edited: I've gone through the information doc once and I would like to ask if Sanson is immune/resistant to Kharaa infection due to his lack of a proper biological body? He's a spirit of sorts if that makes sense, but since he's infectable by the carar disease it's all in a state of ???
for clarification, while Servants do bleed and have certain organs that are similar to humans, their internal composition is sustained entirely by magic (I THINK, Fate/doesn't really get clear on this) and thus they don't have antibodies/cells in the conventional sense.
I know this is kind of a prickly question, I'd just like to ask. Enkidu is made of clay so I think they would be immune, but Sanson has a more human form.
Mission: those aliens Characters: Dave maybe homura or dirk if he asks? I imagine they will both try the same stuff anyway so Details: Can flashstep speed catch a dude or could timestopping because those are both things they'd do. Dave would also loop back to see who the heck was appearing at past him because he is slightly paranoid as hell
jake is definitely going to be exploring the biomes? and he wants to go back through the alien base they found too and look around more BASICALLY LOTS OF EXPLORING. he doesn't know what to do about the creatures but he'll help other people with them!
enkidu wants to uh. murder the weird creatures?? they'll be trying to attack them. because they don't trust this shit so feel free to distract them from it or stop them or help them or whatever.
dirk is going to be making the weirdo creatures a priority. tech or talking to them or killing them or anything, HE WILL TRY TO STOP THIS NONSENSE. all projects (except protecting URSULA's servers) will be on hold until someone works something out for that. SO IF ANYONE WANTS TO JOIN IN AND HELP! he doubts talking to them as an option because apparently... no souls.... so really he wants help sciencing at them to work them out. he will only help with aliens if someone he really likes drags him out to look for stuff BASE SECURITY IS #1 PRIORITY
zelda will be trying to use barriers to keep the creatures away from them at least for a while! they're spooky. she'll also want to talk to them. she'll also want to help birddogs and search for aliens!!
Asgore is going to be trying to contact the aliens with telepathy, if Dirk wants to hear how that goes! He will also be interested in the apparent lack of souls if Dirk volunteers that information, and they could maybe talk about that?
Nanami's going to focus on taking care of the Birdog nests with Komaeda, so if anybody else wants to help them out on that front - in either babysitting the birdogs or babysitting Komaeda (because this guy needs a fucking babysitter) - feel free to give me a heads up! She's also very likely to stop anybody who tries harming aliens or anything that lives and breathes, too.
Asgore will be trying to keep the birddog nests at a perfect incubation temperature with his fire magic! They could probably meet while he's doing that, if you like.
Jade has decided to copy Dave's idea of moving into a watch tower (she grew up on an island tower; it's comforting), so she'll probably be pretty preoccupied with setting that up for the first bit of the month. Feel free to help her make interior decorating decisions!
As far as the missions go, she's happy to tag along on any biome exploration with anybody as a sort of "teleport out of danger free" card, but she's not likely to spearhead any exploration on her own. She'll probably check in on the bird dog eggs. A lot. They're kind of dogs, she can't help herself???
Bolin Hah heeeeh. Oi. OK. I'm going to be very careful about my planning and try not to do too much in a little span of time. Especially with how sporadic I've been lately. Going to try and do some simple plotting with people, and one of the missions with Bolin.
Beyond that, Bolin is going to become aware that Korra is missing and it's simply no longer coincidence that he's not seen her. I'll probably make a post tomorrow for that.
dave will probably be distracted by the alien thing until it is solved; he will otherwise be doing farm/animal shit like he normal does, and probably visit the kharaa several times as per usual for him. he's still living in hephaestus tower but can be found on base around (some) mealtimes/free time. he's always easy to catch via communicator though since he tends to reply to that really fast.
annabeth will be going back to the area she found when percy went missing and also being intense about base security and shit. she will also work on the island base and more of the towers this month! help her.
rapunzel will help with birdogs since she takes care of the base island ones and likes them so w/e and will suggest moving them or trying to take care of the cave crawler problem or whatnot??? she's very weirded out by the aliens, also.

Horō cares primarily about the actual cannibals weird creatures because she believes the base's perimeter needs to be kept as secure as possible. She's not as quick to fight these guys because they're not her primary opponent, but she can be convinced. She uses guns + explosives, and she also has buff and shield magic.
Because she is inherently curious and inherently bad at social norms, she'll probably try giving Nancy a call later in the week/month despite her less pleasant attitude. Someone should probably dial in with her to keep her from sticking her foot all the way down her throat.
But because side quests are side quests, she's also going to be hand-raising a couple of Birdogs. Her spirit fox will be helping. You are also welcome to help if you'd like!
I'm open to just about anything - I really want to get my nose in things without taking on too much. You can also go ahead and add me on Plurk at antiquating if you want to talk somewhere else!

Ada/Eve will be focusing on the aliens! Ada is finally going to do what she does best and attempt to scout them out, figure out any information via their behaviour and how they go about the base and the small chain of islands she found in the past. If they're there at the islands at all since she has a working theory about their appearances, hence her decision to go there of all places.
Eve will attempt to communicate with them via notes and… just making sure Daniel, her squigglefish friend, is safe and sound in case anything happens since he's been hanging around the base for a while after telling him it's safe. Looks like that might not be the case anymore if anything happens whoops sorry buddy.
Roderic IS 👏 HERE 👏 FOR 👏 THE 👏 SAFETY 👏 OF 👏 THE 👏 BIRDOGS. He'll be looking after one of the nests and will be more than happy to help the others with their nests. He wants to make sure they're happy and healthy okay. That's it. That's all he'll be doing this month unless someone needs him to use his powers on something/someone just point him like a radar and he'll pick up whatever he can. He's currently working on a new version of a shield generator for URSULA's servers after giving the first one he made to Naoko's group. But for real THE 👏 BIRDOGS' 👏 SAFETY 👏 COMES 👏 FIRST.
hajime is going to be trying to help the baby birdogs. she's looking into figuring out what kind of things will keep cave crawlers away from the nests and also guarding said nests?? she is Concerned. she will also be looking out for the aliens although i haven't figured out exactly what to do on that front yet?? SHE'LL PROBABLY ATTEMPT TO CHAT WITH THEM TBH
izetta is still settling but she will volunteer to help in absolutely everything ever?? she's new and still trying to figure out what the hell is even going on here so she'd probably tag along with other people?? so like if anyone needs like added muscle or something for protection she'd be pretty good at that
karkat is gonna do biome exploration?? he is... taking the kharaa that's on base with him to see if khacrab reacts to anything in particularly at any of the biomes he explores juuust in case. telling valentine about that plan is not gonna be fun rip. anyway besides that he is gonna be p jumpy this month since creepy creatures stalking you is gonna feel a little too much like murderstuck for his tastes
Takeru is brand new so operation: explore all the things is right up his alley. He'll happily drag random strangers along or team up with anyone. Give me all the dumb adventures.
+ general getting acclimated stuff. It's hard to maintain his terrible sense of fashion when you have to actually... make... clothes, please teach him practical skills.
Eve will happily make clothes for him if he wants! And teach him how to knit if he'll like to make something for himself to wear because they do have a sort of clothes replicator here but. Like would he be interested in making a knitted hat or. Also she knows how to bake so if he wants to learn how to cook there's that. Ada is planning to head out towards a small chain of islands to investigate the aliens due to a theory she has in mind. (It's incorrect but hey she learned something new from the results.) Then is planning to drop by somewhere to grab some eggs to bring back to the base.
SpEAKING OF EGGS. My other character, Roderic, is planning to look after some birdog eggs and is planning to do so by bringing them to the base and making an incubator for them. While that happens, he and his dog, Daisy, are planning to protect the other nests by scaring the predators away. So that's what my characters are doing and Takeru can join in if he wants!
homura will mainly be occupied by the aliens; depending on how hostile they are, she might make it her personal mission to hunt down and kill them all? aren't you glad she has guns?? lmao. she will definitely be looking into the biomes, most likely for points of entry or any places where the aliens might be able to like. get in and out. so she can potentially block them off and isolate them from each other. homura is homura, news at 11. she might do some birddog stuff too, depending on her mood this month.
that said i and homura are up for anything - once the alien issue moves along, her month might be pretty open so hmu whenever!
also in addition to carrying around a bag for obama the squig, homura has a kickass robotic falcon that she will be seen with constantly because dirk makes bad decisions
Hotaru will be missing from January 7th-14th as she's going to be canon updated. She awakened as Sailor Saturn last month, so she'll now appear as a magical girl every so often. I am flexible if people would like their character to recognize Sailor Saturn as Hotaru right away or being magically unable to! Whatever's most fun for you is fun for me.
Otherwise, she will be primarily focusing on the creepy strange creatures. She'll receive a vision of one of them being consumed in green light and The Song being sung. One of her new powers is astral projection, so she may try to investigate via that route since it's... more... cautious? Maybe.
If your character is new, Hotaru will ask them what their skills and powers are. It's all voluntary and she'll only ask a person once, so if they won't share that info, that's fine! They can fill it out themselves or Hotaru will record what they say verbatim.
Sorey is going to be exploring the biomes for alien labs--like everyone else he's just trying to locate them first and foremost, but he's also going to be keeping an eye out for and Sea Emperor kids or possibly the Sea Emperor herself! If they find any empty alien bases he'll want to check around for a way to pull information from them to see if they can get locations for all of the bases (he will need help for that so anyone who is good with alien tech...don't let him break anything).
Other than that he'll want to assist with whatever base updates are happening and checking in on birddogs? let's make safe decisions together!!
erina is finally going out after being a hermit since she got here. she'll be going to the base island for the first time (i know..... I KNOW) to explore and see what's there, so if you want your character to tag along with her/be forced to interact with this friendless loser then hmu! honestly she just wants to see the tinkerbulls okay they're getting less ugly the more she sees them.
she will also help with the baby birdogs! honestly save her because once she's there she'll never take her eyes off of them... rip she's really becoming a mom.
Horō's social graces are a bit unusual because she's a weirdo. She would be totally eager to make Erina's acquaintance or be forced to spend time with her. She'll be on Birdog duty, too, so they can work on that together!
Kirishima will be branching out some more after a slow start! he'll be 1. checking out the Lost River to look for aliens and also just get more familiar with a new area. depending on how things go, he'll more than likely also be 2. looking into a way to modify his wetsuit so it's stronger like his hero costume! it's not super useful to have a hardening power if your suit doesn't withstand much, after all.
3. he's a little bummed that he didn't get to make the base more festive last month, so he might set about putting up aesthetically questionable motivational posters in the weight room part of the gym facilities. that's incidentally where he's been sleeping, mostly, since that's where he spends the majority of his time. go figure.

Whooo, been an while since I scraped up time to do one of these.
Kanaya is going to do what she usually does, explore, sew, do her duties as a moirail, hang with friends, garden. Most all of that takes a backseat to the new beings appearing. Kanaya is going to be wary of them, and keep her chainsaw on her at almost all times this month. If she can, she'll attempt to communicate with them or otherwise study. Need to know if they are a threat or not.
As for the birdogs... *rolls up sleeves* that even ursurps the new beings in importance. Kanaya is all over that, and is going to spend a large amount of time protecting and raising the birdogs. Any threats are getting bisected with a chainsaw.

Eve will happily make clothes for him if he wants! And teach him how to knit if he'll like to make something for himself to wear because they do have a sort of clothes replicator here but.

Ada is planning to head out towards a small chain of islands to investigate the aliens due to a theory she has in mind. (It's incorrect but hey she learned something new from the results.) Then is planning to drop by somewhere to grab some eggs to bring back to the base.SpEAKING OF EGGS. My other character, Roderic, is planning to look after some birdog eggs and is planning to do so by bringing them to the base and making an incubator for them. While that happens, he and his dog, Daisy, are planning to protect the other nests by scaring the predators away. So that's what my characters are doing and Takeru can join in if he wants!

Otherwise, she will be primarily focusing on the creepy strange creatures. She'll receive a vision of one of them being consumed in green light and The Song being sung. One of her new powers is astral projection, so she may try to investigate via that route since it's... more... cautious? Maybe.
If your character is new, Hotaru will ask them what their skills and powers are. It's all voluntary and she'll only ask a person once, so if they won't share that info, that's fine! They can fill it out themselves or Hotaru will record what they say verbatim.

3. he's a little bummed that he didn't get to make the base more festive last month, so he might set about putting up aesthetically questionable motivational posters in the weight room part of the gym facilities. that's incidentally where he's been sleeping, mostly, since that's where he spends the majority of his time. go figure.

Kanaya Maryam
Kanaya is going to do what she usually does, explore, sew, do her duties as a moirail, hang with friends, garden. Most all of that takes a backseat to the new beings appearing. Kanaya is going to be wary of them, and keep her chainsaw on her at almost all times this month. If she can, she'll attempt to communicate with them or otherwise study. Need to know if they are a threat or not.
As for the birdogs... *rolls up sleeves* that even ursurps the new beings in importance. Kanaya is all over that, and is going to spend a large amount of time protecting and raising the birdogs. Any threats are getting bisected with a chainsaw.
