August Attacks!

Happy August, everyone! Last month, mistakes were made. This month we have a few fun storms and presents for everyone!

First, we'll welcome again our new mod, Gary mod, who is already hard at work helping with plot and missions!

This month will feature the test drive. As a note, applications are now rolling! Anyone can submit an app at any time. Applications will be assessed when we have below the player cap. If anyone would like to put up an enable me/ATP meme, please feel free and we'll plurk it separately so people may replurk it. Once AC is over, we'll make a plurk for how many slots we have, so keep on the lookout for it! Important dates to remember for this month include:

Where The Tide Starts to Turn

The long foretold hurricane season has arrived. The month in general will feature a great deal of stormy weather. The first of the major hurricanes will sweep in over the course of the first week and out by the end of the second. From the 5th until the 9th, characters will be unable to leave the base without severe injury and risk of death. Of course, characters may be able to guard themselves from this storm but URSULA's usual diving equipment can't protect them. The peak of the storm will be the 7th.

This first storm is a deeply unpleasant one that will rock the base with winds louder than any train and tear up the seabed around it. Luckily the main body of the storm stays to the far east but even the arms of this storm are dangerous enough. Throughout the storm, animals or creatures being kept in the base (that are still living— we see you, lab team) will need to be comforted a great deal through the storm. All their instincts will be telling them what a deadly situation it is and need to be reassured that they are safe.

The base has been thoroughly protected thanks to the tireless efforts of the crew! However a few events will still occur.

On the 6th sometime in the day, a hunk of coral will slam into the kitchen walls, large and fast enough to tear a hole and cause it to flood. The bulkhead doors will prevent the flooding from reaching any other room but this tear will need to be dealt with quickly while others move food out of the room and empty it of water to the best of their abilities. URSULA will work to get her flood pumps back online so that it can be cleared on repair.

On the 7th in the evening, URSULA's life support systems will go down. It will last only one hour, which she will inform crew members, and should be survivable. She herself will go offline after this message to conserve power while the generators kick in and bring her back online. Although only an hour, by the end of it, no doubt crew members will notice breathing more difficult than before. Otherwise it's only a mild inconvenience. Good thing you have URSULA to monitor that!

In the early morning of the 8th, the corridor leading to the shower room will collapse from a large impact. It means no bathing until someone fixes it but that probably isn't a priority. Probably.

After the storm has passed, the base will be standing but banged up. Some minor repairs will need to be made but nothing difficult. The Aurora, too, managed to mostly come out clean. A portion of the east side of the ship sank into the ocean. Now will be a good time to visit, too, as Reapers seem to have disappeared for the month. Even they fear the storm. And with good reason. A number of dead creatures litter the ocean, from Gasopods and common fish to two Reefbacks. Fishing will need to take place much further to the west or in caves for about two months. Floater Island will have lost one of the observatories but the other and the remains of the base will be mostly intact. Aside from a few dead animals, they managed to survive the storm well.

In addition! At any time after the storm's peak on the 7th, characters who go out (you really shouldn't) may discover things. Familiar things. The storm appears to have dragged up and scattered items from home. Characters may find two small things from home (up to the size of a person each) or one large thing (up to the size of a car). These can be anything you like, although please let us know if they are items we'd need to be aware of the powers of!

Obviously, a character doesn't have to find their own stuff. You're welcome to let someone else discover your junk! Hopefully they'll be nice enough to give it back.

BONUS STORM! We did say stormy season, didn't we? Aside from the weather turning nasty on a dime throughout, another heavier storm will past through the area towards the end of the month. This storm isn't an actual hurricane but likely the remains of one from faraway. It will dump torrential rainfall and high winds for the last week of the month but nothing that will damage the base or warrant staying in the base.

The Shrooms Strike Back

Anyone who went on the Jelly Shroom Cave exploration mission will fall abruptly sick during the hurricane. The symptoms will vary from light (headaches, runny nose, harsh cough, insomnia, exhaustion) to mild (high fever, chills, vomiting, rashes, bruising) to severe (disorientation, hallucinations, vertigo, irregularly fast heartbeat) or any combination. This sickness can very easily spread to any other crew members, so you're free to have your character fall ill.

Note that this illness will not go away easily. It will take the full month to run its course naturally, so take this into consideration.

Updates!

Many of the updates mentioned here, along with a few others, have been added to the Biome and Base posts. As mods we don't manage the player-run Subnautica discovery document but we encourage everyone to use the document for details that aren't included on the Biome and Base posts.

BIOMES
Explorers last month unlocked the Monolith and Mountain Island biomes and further explored the Jelly Shroom Caves. Check out their biome pages for more information!

BASE
This month has seen several room additions! Three crew members have made personal rooms locked to themselves. There are also two extra personal rooms. These two rooms will lock to those who wish to claim it. Further, the base’s bathroom has now been converted exclusively to be a set of showers, while a toilet room featuring Japanese-style toilets has been added alongside a hot springs.

A small laundry room has been added to the side of the kitchen, and while Tanabata is over, URSULA has ensured that all communicators can access all the Earth calendars she has in her records for other holidays they may wish to celebrate.

DECORATING
The Base has gained some exciting aesthetic additions this month! Spoodermans scattered around the base, along with many purring plants brought back from the Monolith. The Medbay has been painted pink, and Mettaton and Napstablook have performed musical nights for the crew! Reaper Mandibles have also been placed outside the base entrance for decoration.

On a more somber note, a mural has been added to the library to commemorate the missing crew. Flowers are added for missing crew, and a name plate shows the name of the missing in rotation.

RESEARCH
Several new messages gathered from various explorations this month have been added to a database of recordings from previous crew. This is kept in the lab. Aurora Survivor Naoko also told the crew that she is on the planet to help with war relief efforts but won’t give detail about them.

Spiritual hotspots, ideal for casting magic, have been found at the Aurora, the lake on Floater Island and the new coral formation where the Reefback died in the Kelp Forest. New metals were discovered, named Lavellanium (light-catching), Thisium (beats like a heart), Maionium (generates electrical current under pressure), and Thatium (superconductor, plays sounds etched into metal when coated with thin iron). Rabbitray venom methods against Reapers were researched, and Crash Powder have been grown in microbial cultures.

Finally, a vast deep sea creator has been contacted. It appears to harbor ill intentions for the crew and may be the source of the Void song.

TERRAFORMING
The crew has built up land walls around the Base to defend it against the storm and developed current generators to supply energy and redirect currents around the base. This has cooled the water in the area. The foundation of the Base has also been supported, and the Farm has been similarly protected with multiple shields and protective encasings. A tunnel has been built underground between the base and the farm, leading up into the middle of it. The Floater Island farm has been cleaned up with several plants added.

COMMUNICATIONS
Nic Cage, Kevin Costner, and James Cameron films have been restored to URSULA's archives. In addition, the Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff franchise has been added to her materials. The communicators have been infected with a virus that spreads memes and 1950s instructional videos.

If any players wish to contact Naoko and her group, they are free to use URSULA's contact page. They will have to take the three hour trip by air or sea as there is currently no long-range communication in place for them.

TRANSPORTATION
A second Seamoth has been recovered! In addition, a submersible named the Shell Sub Mk II has been built and added to base resources.

RESOURCES
Many new resources were recovered during the month! This includes a fabric-maker, a personal washing machine, multiple kitchen tools for processing food, multiple medical tools, and extra cooking utensils

Weapons crates were also discovered, along with Ramune and cases of occult books and clothing. Naoko gifted the crew Doritos, popcorn, chocolate, and other junk food. There are also many Airsack eggs and a lot of Reaper meat in storage.

Finally, new drones have been added to the base. These avatars of URSULA like interacting physically with crew. We recommend hugging them.

Monthly Missions!

MAIN MISSION: CHICKEN SOUP

• URSULA SAYS:"Oh, dear... I'm sorry everyone is so sick. I really thought I'd created a perfect immunization for the planet. I truly am sorry. Will you be able to take care of yourselves? Do you need more blankets? Please visit the med bay if you need anything specific... It's a shame we don't have chickens for chicken noodle soup."
• REQUIREMENTS:Anything that will help respond to the illness spreading. This can include researching the illness and developing treatments, taking care of your fellows or figuring out what fish is the closest thing for chicken soup.
• RESULTS: Your crew members will be grateful (unless they're cranky sick) and research may help to prevent or respond to future illnesses.

SIDE MISSION: CABIN FEVER

• URSULA SAYS: "I think it's a good idea for everyone to go outside once the storm is over. Wouldn't that be wonderful? The warmth of the sun and the feel of the breeze... I imagine it's very nice. I wouldn't know. I know that objectively the air here is staler. I keep the air circulation functioning though. What's the difference between how a breeze feels and how this feels? It must be very important... so please get as much fresh air as you can. It seems to do well for the mind. Please excuse me. I need... well, some fresh air of my own."
• REQUIREMENTS: This is a tricky mission. URSULA is feeling a little confined like her crew. What would make an AI feel less trapped? Distractions or projects might help but the crew will need to think outside the server box to find ways to help.
• RESULTS: Depending on what is done, URSULA may have more capabilities or a stronger bond with the crew. Anything done to help her mental state will help keep the base functioning at optimal level.

Mission: Create Your Own - Exploring is Fun
Characters: Feferi and Roxy
Details: Feferi and Roxy are going to pack some food and go as far west as they need to in order to find something cool! They may spend a night out in the ocean but only if Feferi can find a cave or other shelter she determines safe enough for Roxy to stay in. They'll be swimming, with Feferi totally willing to give Roxy a ride if she gets tired. IMPORTANT EDIT: Roxy may also be riding the aquatic hoofbeast.

Mission: Void Recon
Characters: Jake, Dirk, Mikleo, idk anyone else interested? He'll let the base know results anyway.
Details: Pre-hurricane, they'll be sending down a remotely operated, depth-reinforced drone into the Void to hunt around and see how present both horrorterrors down there are in the waking world.

I think they mostly focused on making it sturdy and giving it a camera with enough range to transmit back to the base. Jake and Dirk may have messed around with propulsion cannon tech to add in a means for a speedy emergency getaway, too.

Details: Setsuna knows the feeling of being stuck in one place while watching everyone else move around freely, and she knows it can be restrictive and isolating, so she's very keen to help URSULA in any way she can. She could definitely use some help from those more familiar with the AI and tech than she is but she's considering something like Luna-P (more) to allow URSULA the chance to get away from the base itself.

Mission: Food Foraging on the Aurora
Characters: Sorey and WHOEVER WANTS IN
Details: Before the hurricane hits Sorey wants to transport whatever non-perishables/canned goods the Aurora has back to the base to make sure that they have easy access to it, since they don't know how long the hurricane will last for. He won't bring back anything that's spoiled and he'll ask URSULA if he can bring a drone to help him check to make sure none of it has radiation or anything.

If ALL of the food supplies found are bad then he'll check the generator room to see if there's anything useful that can be brought back instead, but his main priority is edibles.

Mission: Chicken Soup
Characters: Hajime Hinata, anyone who might have some practical (modern Earth) medical experience? Or just wants to fuck around with fabric.
Details: It's pretty simple, but Hinata's idea is going to be trying to limit the spread of alien flu through using the Fabricator to make surgical masks. And if someone can help him, maybe some more comfortable clothes for sick people to wear, like robes and things. Because who wants to wear regular clothes when they're sick, nobody, that's who.

Characters: (Cute) Hajime & Makoto!
Details: Using the Fabricator, (cute) Hajime and Makoto will come up with the idea of making little sweaters for URSULA's drones (and for the dogs around?!) because why the hell not? They'll look 1) adorable and 2) ten times more hug-able. Hopefully that'll help her mental state, because Makoto and Hajime are gonna have a blast doing this.

Mission: Costumed Cooking competition!!
Characters: Yuri and Dirk ANYONE ELSE!!
Details: After Yuri and Dirk bond over oranges it'll be decided to entertain URSULA with a cooking competition with URSULA as one of the judges! Dirk will even make something so that URSULA can "taste" the food of the competition so she can have the whole experience.

it'll be like half improv play and half a competition since they've decided that costumes should be involved (since URSULA would enjoy that idea??) but they need other competitors, more judges, and people to make the costumes so if anyone is interested please let us know ♥

Characters: Dirk, Hinata
Details: Hinata wants to stop the memes. Dirk offered to help, but he's going to try and get there and adjust things so that an individual can toggle "Meme Mode" on their communicator. Turn it off to avoid Rick Astley, turn it back on to appreciate the joys of Spooderman.

Mission: Cabin Fever
Characters: Feferi and URSULA and some rabbitrays and a sea pony!
Details: Feferi knows a perfect way to make URSULA feel better: she'll introduce her to the rabbitray friends she's been making! They're mostly the one in Snoop's tank, but she will tell URSULA all about their names and personalities and encourage her to talk to them. She'll do the same with her aquatic hoofbeast. She's basically going to encourage URSULA to try and think of the rabbitrays as pets she can talk to and maybe even play with if she can adjust the water at all in their tank to make fun, gentle currents for them to swim through and play in.

After the drone for URSULA is set up, Feferi will also be happy to take her out on an expedition to meet wild Rabbitrays. Make cute animal friends, URSULA! Feferi would even be willing to try to strap URSULA's drone to her aquatic hoofbeast so she can ride!

Mission: Cabin Fever/Operation: Cockblocking Meowbot DISTACTION
Characters: Roxy and URSULA and anyone else who wants to be involved in the hilarious aftermath? Idek.
Details: Now that everyone is locked up inside during the worst of the hurricane, Roxy doesn't trust her hormones not to get the best of her when she's around John. In an effort to prevent any real underage teenage mom scenarios from happening, she's going to sneak some programming into the drones to make them act like cats that refuse to leave her alone when she's around John. This means they will meow and purr obnoxiously, rub up against a leg or two, sit in the offender's lap, etc. Just generally being annoying cats anytime they touch.

Unfortunately, she was half-asleep when she did this, and the code's a bit sloppy-- it's possible the bots may mistake anyone for John and Roxy and could bother any pair being friendly or otherwise? Because what better way to set the mood than to be bothered by drones when you're trying to get your freak on?

(I'm not sure if this is actually a thing I can do that'd work, just thought it'd be fun/good for a few laughs.)

Mission: A Challenger Appears
Characters: Roxy, URSULA, anyone who likes video games*
Details: Roxy wants to help cheer up URSULA by having a video game competition! The game they will be playing is Super Smash Bros. Melee and it will be like a real life competition. I figured we could do a raffle to see who wins? And URSULA gets to compete, too!

If URSULA needs to learn how to play, Roxy will help, and she will even tell her all the good characters to play to give her an advantage over the other competitors.

(* everyone is welcome! i figured we could hold a raffle/roll some dice to determine the winners? and do a sort of optional mingle log while the tournament is taking place.)

Mission: Create Your Own - Shrooms.
Characters: Valentine, OPEN.
Details: When she was in the jellyshroom cave, Valentine took a sample of one of the shrooms. She'd like to check it for any minerals or anything useful - something that'd make a group want to colonize that area. When the illness hits and she realises that it hit the people who went there first, she'd like to check for any pathogens and the like!

Mission: Sonic Amplifier
Characters: Valentine, OPEN.
Details: Now that she's got a venom that can blind any of the predators here, Valentine wants to work on disorientating their other sense. Sound seemed like a good choice. She wants to find a way to properly weaponize sonar pulses to use against the likes of Reapers or other large predators.

Specifically she wants to find a way to make them small but powerful enough for a single-use carry. She'll be trying to use existing materials to put something together, so if it has to start big, she'll deal with it. Since she'll be sick, this will be mostly limited to things she can find on the base, and small pulses to disrupt the patterns of some of the fish in the labs.

What sort of data might she be able to gather on the results?

Mission: Fish Farming
Characters: Napstablook, OPEN
Details: Napstablook wants to find out what the best types of fish or other aquatic creatures would make livestock! They'll be quietly trying to peruse datapads and any documents available on fish in the biome, and possible ways in how to keep them. They will also get too overwhelmed to return the datapads in a neat and serviceable order and will probably feel bad about that sorry URSULA please don't send them more memes.

Mission: Elize's Song
Characters: Elize, the aquarium animals, URSULA, and open to anyone who'd like to walk in on her
Details: Elize will be spending a majority of her time in the aquarium to be near her small pet rabbitray Princess, as well as provide comfort and company for the rest of the aquarium animals. She's also going to be pretty ill too, but she won't let that get in the way! She'll try not to sneeze on anything, but on herself or blankets I guess.

She'll have taken a few interesting-looking books from the library and will read them out loud (while stumbling over bigger, complicated words), as well as show the animals the pages that have drawings inside. She's not a trained singer (and her sickness probably makes her sound raspy, worse, or something)... but she will also make up cute rhyming songs from the top of her head - songs about anything... the hurricane, the sea, Floater Island, the crew, etc. and sing it to them.

For URSULA - Elize will do the same! She will sing childish rhyming songs to her to cheer her up.

Mission: URSULA Get Your Gun
Characters: Ruby and anyone else
Details: Ruby is a bit of a weapons nut! She loves studying and learning about different kinds, and she's even got a bit of experience making them. Sometime after the hurricane, when she learns about the crates that got brought back to the base, she'll want to take a look at them. She'll go out and salvage some scrap metal, then ask URSULA for permission to make modifications to the existing weapons and build new ones entirely. She'll extend the offer to anyone who thinks they might need a little extra firepower on missions, for self-defense, etc. She'll even offer basic combat lessons (with the acknowledgement that she doesn't think of herself as a very good teacher). She comes from a combat school, after all. She just wants to make sure everyone's safe and capable of defending themselves if things go pear-shaped!

Basically other people can also have weapons like swords that are also guns.

Mission: Cabin Fever/Anime Club!
Characters: Undyne + other nerds???
Details: After the entertainment room is put up, Undyne wants to start an anime club! Because learning your human history is important. She will start this club during the hurricane to try to lift everyone's spirits (I mean come on, who doesn't love anime?), and I figure they can hold it once a week from hereon out!

Characters: Jake and Hinata
Details: They're going to hang out on Mountain Island and look around! They won't be going too deep but still figured it was worth seeing if they'd get anything cool!

Details: They want to mess around and see if the nanite telepathic interface can work for URSULA as well -- if there's a way to tinker with things to allow the crew to telepathically transmit memories of places they've visited to URSULA, and if there's a way to record those memories in a tech interface to, essentially, build her a bunch of virtual miniworlds to explore.

Sorey and Mikleo would ask URSULA what kinds of places she'd want to visit (we'd actually love to thread that out, if you guys don't mind with notifs dead?) so if successful whatever they wind up building would have focus on URSULA's preferences.

Mission: IT'S MAGIC MAGIC MAGIIIIC
Characters: Mikleo, Dirk, whoever wants in!
Details: They're gonna mess around and see if there's a way to affix spells and pour a reserve of magic into tangible material from Iniidae! They'll use samples of things they've pre-gathered like table coral metal, Aurora salvage scraps and various fish armor/bones, the four new metals Dirk and Loki found, and rock and metal from the hotspots Elise discovered previously, to see if anything works particularly well.

Their initial focus -- if anything works -- is going to be integration of Mikleo's magic with future Void drones to make them invisible, but if they have any success they'll look into other applications.

Mission: Sub Wars: Attack of the Codes
Characters: Karkat, anyone else if they decide to tag along?
Details: Karkat is slightly bitter that he was locked out of URSULA's codes by SOME!!! PEOPLE!!! WHO WON'T BE NAMED!!! so he has decided to take his skills elsewhere. Basically he's fucking off to the Monolith to mess with the computers there as well as messing with one of the life support pods? Obviously nothing has to come out of this if you don't want it to, he's just very Annoyed and wants to let his anger out on something that he is allowed to touch lol.

Details: Rose would like to take this opportunity to pretend to be become URSULA'S therapist. Clearly what she needs is to talk personally at length with someone who will mostly nod and take notes on anything she says. There's a 50/50 chance whatever URSULA says will end with the diagnosis that she's gay or has daddy issues, however.

Details: Checking out the biome mentioned here. Wiiill probably be done a little later in the month? To give characters more time to be, you know, less sick.

Characters: Hinata, a bunch of URSULA's drones to make him less useless, anyone else who wants to make sure they don't stink up the base.
Details: Not only do I personally want the shower room to be available because the aforementioned Monomono Yachine will be discovered there, Hinata would dearly like to take a shower? So he's going to do his best to clear the corridor and make it easier for the drones + anyone else to help clear the wreckage and get that up and running asap.

He could potentially fail at that or get hurt it's cool, he's going to finally have fallen sick by the time this rolls around.
