Welcome to November! We hope you had a fun Halloween! Fall is winding down and it's time for... rain? Apparently yes, because storms and generally gloomy, chilly days are to follow here on Iniidae. And by 'chilly' we mean it's dipping down into the 60° F (15° C) at times. Oh the horror. This month the focus is on exploring these murky depths in search of answers.
As a note the player cap was indeed raised to 55 so enjoy!
Become Captain Nemo
With all the strange happenings and problems that face the crew, URSULA has decided to take a proactive approach and send the crew out exploring to understand their surroundings better. She'd rather they know what they're facing and all the knowledge they can get will help. To this end she's chosen a biome bordering the Monolith.
The Grand Reef is a beautiful area full of new mysteries and perhaps even some answers! But we can't know for certain until we dive into the depths here. Though darker and deeper than most areas, it has precious lighting given off by strange, bioluminescent pods and plants. Given the depths, it's best to wear your wetsuit and take some vehicles for any exploring.
Three new creatures can be spotted here as follows:
Jellyrays are as frequent as fish in the Grand Reef and swim in large, glowing flocks. They are, luckily, docile creatures that will allow you to swim with them and even touch them if you like. They seem attracted to light.
Crabsquids are also attracted to light but you probably don't want to attract them, considering they're aggressive hunters. They are capable of unleashing EMP blasts that can disable electronics in the area, so be careful with your things!
Sea Treaders are the elephants of the sea. They use their long snouts as a third foot and graze as they walk. While the large adults seem safe, the young are probably targets for Crabsquids and other creatures. They're a constantly migrating species.
Of course just because URSULA chose this spot doesn't mean you can't explore other areas! In fact there may be quite a lot to find still so it's up to you how to spend your exploration.
It's worth noting that until recently the area had quite a few Reaper Leviathans but they seem to be gone...
Some of the updates mentioned here, along with a few others, have been added to the Biome and Base posts. As mods we don't manage the player-run Subnautica discovery document but we encourage everyone to use the document for details that aren't included on the Biome and Base posts.
BIOMES
The Monolith is no longer flashing different colored lights. It, however, lacks any lights at all now. Please bring a flashlight the next time you visit.
A new area known as the Sparse Reef has been discovered. It is completely barren and is a possible good location for terraforming. Hint hint. Also, several crew members have been checking out locations on a map. So far they have traveled to an underwater area at Mountain Island where they discovered that a previous crew had been searching for something.
BASE
An ice rink that also doubles as a normal skating rink is now at the base. Other new additions include a lot of skeleton robots that may be line dancing at any given time, the expansion of the Magister's tank to reach across the entire base, and two of the healing/sleep pods from the monolith that are now in the med bay.
TECH
A few crew members are building a new submersible in order to gain access to both the area below the lava veins, which several missions have pointed to as a potentially key area, as well as to continue searching the others markers on the map that was found on Amity Island. The sub is still not completed yet.
There is now a scanner in the labs that functions as a portable microscope and database that can better identify living tissues in items you examine. The more the crew adds to the database, the more exact it will become. URSULA's life detection system has also been upgraded via using drone as signal relays.
TOURISTS
A cargo ship known as the Sunbeam has seen the distress beacon (more commonly known as the flashing lights) that the Monolith has sent out. The base has sent out a message to it and the Sunbeam responded, giving information on the war with the Kharaa, a picture of Iniidae from space, and other things. They are still outside of the orbit of the planet and are waiting for a second response.
ANIMALS AND ALIENS
The egg that Komaeda and Undyne received has hatched into a beautiful baby reaper! Outside of the base, the Kharaa population is slowly being introduced to crew members by Dave. The Kharaa now know how to line dance and play twister, on top of already knowing how to rap and plant apple trees. This info on the Kharaa is still unknown to the majority of the crew until Dave, who discovered them, decides to inform the rest of the base.
HORRORTERRORS
You may have noticed that the nightmares that were plaguing the crew earlier in October stopped! It's all thanks to Sorey and Mikleo, who battled the Sea Dragon in the Dreamscape. They didn't defeat it, but they did manage to drive it back and to stop causing the nightmares. It appeared to be in a weakened and tired state already at the time of the confrontation.
FOOD
A few new items at the base's menu includes marshmallows, multiple kinds of candy, and burgers. Like all things made from the resources on Iniidae, they don't taste exactly the same as their Earth counterparts, but it's better than nothing! Somehow no one has managed to figure out cheese yet. More scavenging the Aurora has uncovered seeds for growing lettuce, sweet potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers. The Sunbeam has also given them more junk food as well as vitamin fruit snacks. There is also very, very, very hot sauce. Be careful!
Remember you're also free to explore and do whatever you wish and can ask us about your own mission objectives as well.
MAIN MISSION: GRASSHOPPER AND THE ANT
URSULA SAYS:"Naoko has left us a message! She says: It looks like this planet has a rainy season. Great. Well since we just have a little shelter and a small farm, could you guys lend us a hand? We need supplies. I'm not picky on what. Wood, ore, metals, food, whatever. The more variety the better. Thanks."
REQUIREMENTS: Not everything Naoko's looking for can be found in the usual scavenging spots so it might be worth looking around some new areas.
RESULTS: Naoko might be willing to share some special information.
SIDE MISSION: BORED TWENTYSOMETHING
URSULA SAYS: "She also passed along a second message from Jenn: Hi everyone! I'm kind of totally bored and going out of my mind over here? But I've got a secret stash of shit that I can share if you guys can help me. How do you not go crazy seriously? Uh, thanks in advance for whatever you can do!"
REQUIREMENTS: How do you entertain a bored twnetysomething? Well most of the base has probably the same mentality as her so it's worth a try, right?
RESULTS: Junk food and easily re-hydrated fast food! Maybe a few toys. Who knows.
Mission: sunbeam 2.0 Characters: karkat ft. ppl who gave him advice Details: sorry this took so long but this is his response after the last message. ALSO i have a followup question re: the movies that were sent but i figured i might as well ask it here instead of replying to a comment in an old post. would the movies that were give like any insight regarding the war on the kharaa that the crew doesn't know?
anyway the message, filled with a bunch of dirty filthy lies lmao:
"We got everything. The film choices were uh, interesting. I'm going to assume that you don't have any that veer more towards the romantic comedy end of the spectrum? That's fine. Totally cool. But everyone says thanks, they appreciate it, blah blah okay moving on. I'm sixteen but we have plenty of adults here. Naoko's in charge. But people are pretty busy at the moment with projects and trying to explore the planet, so this job got dumped on me.
How long are you planning on being in this area anyway? It's supposed to be out in the middle of fucking nowhere right? I am assuming that once you move far enough from the planet we won't be able to talk to you anymore but before you ditch us I want to ask about any info you might have about ISHMAEL? We think he might be on the planet but I am not sure if you have noticed, it's fucking gigantic. How the fuck are we supposed to find one AI on this backwater globe-- shit I'm ranting again. But yeah if you know anything about him or Mimi that would be fan-fucking-tastic."
Karkat we all know you're only like seven, you liar.
> The movies do tell a story, though the story is heavily saturated in propaganda. The general idea that can be gathered is that the Kharaa were 'discovered' by a mining company. Ever since, the Kharaa have been dead set on conquering humans. The Kharaa themselves seem to be hardwired to spread and reproduce, thus the emphasis on conquest. All that people need to know, of course, is that the Kharaa must be destroyed.
> According to the movies, no human has ever been taken alive, so that the Kharaa can't use them as hosts, but it seems unlikely to be true, doesn't it?
> As for the message they receive back:
"We're still debating when to head out. Even if you're not a bunch of kids, it still doesn't feel right to just abandon some survivors. Uh but let me look up some stuff about this ISHMAEL thing...
Okay, looks like... hyper-advanced military grade AI. Oh yeah I read about that not long ago. I forgot its name was ISHMAEL. You know, I love conspiracy theories so I'll share the one I read about. They say it was actually made to combat Kharaa human hosts. Supposedly we evolve into some big freaky things when the Kharaa get in us. But yeah Mimi Yun was the creator. Apparently she based the personality on an imaginary friend she had as a kid. It killed all the 'monsters'. Aw that's cute. It says here she was on the Aurora which is currently on some planet I've never heard of.
If you think ISHMAEL is on the planet, I guess you're safe as long as no one has Kharaa in them! Oh yeah and we've got a romantic sitcom if you like those? We'll drop it down for you at the same coordinates. It's about this wedding planner and the people she helps out. She's got three crushes, it's pretty fun.
Anyway, if you need anything else, we have enough extra fuel for a week."
pretend i did this last week I LOST TRACK OF TIME..... anyway since they said they had enough fuel for a week this is probably gonna be the last exchange then?? i think
Ha ha ha. No Kharaa here whatsoever, since we're all still alive and not trying to conquer humanity and all. Anyway, we'll figure something out. Like I said, as long as that stupid pulse is still doing the shooty thing then any rescue attempt is going to end up needing to get rescued itself which would be really fucking inconvenient for us.
Do you know anything about the ships called the Nostromo and the Degasi and what happened to them? Or about any other ships that have come to this region in the last couple of years and never returned? We're thinking they probably all ended up crashing here. We're finding remains of old ships so knowing more about them might be helpful to us.
Also do the Kharaa use any technology involving crystals or something? Some files we found had people worrying about large crystals here possibly getting into Kharaa hands... claws... whatever, but we're not sure if we should take that threat seriously or not? That's all.
Oh wait shit do you guys have any chalk? We need chalk. Preferably in different colors.
Nostromo? From Alien? Nah I'm kidding. But shit yeah we know them. Another scavenger crew. Supposedly there's no proof but everyone knows they scavenge from ships that the Kharaa take down. If you see them, Kharaa can't be far away so don't welcome them. As for the Degasi, they're famous. A modern day adventure story. This professor planet hops with his son and the goddamn best mercenary that money could buy. But she's just in it for fun. Sounds like something out of a movie doesn't it?
As for the crystal thing, they might. The problem with Kharaa is they adapt so goddamn fast. I hear they can adapt to anything to survive. They have all the technology of everything they conquer, too. Wouldn't surprise me if they've got some crystal using in there. Which, uh, makes me curious about a lot of things but you say you're fine...
Since you guys are worrying us so much, we whipped up some chalk for you. A whole crate of it in every color you could want. Rick donated his comic book collection, too. And Sal threw in some more movies that she's got. Hope it helps you pass the time.
Anyway we'll let people know you guys are down there so maybe we can get regular shipments down to you. Good luck and keep safe!
