JUNE OOC POST

≡U.R.S.U.L.A. NAVIGATION

June Arrives!
Happy June, everyone! We hope you enjoyed your island vacation! Summer is just warming up and there are some fun events on the horizon!

----

This month will feature the test drive, as well as reserves and applications. We encourage everyone to spread the word! If anyone would like to put up an enable me/ATP meme, please feel free and we'll plurk it separately so people may replurk it. Important dates to remember for this month include:

JUNE 15th: Test Drive Meme
JUNE 17th: Reserves Open
JUNE 24th: Reserves close; Applications open
JUNE 27th: Reserves Expire
JULY 1st: Applications close

And The Planet Began to Shake
This is a special plot that will be ongoing through the month, a take-it-at-your-own-pace idea. It happens on no specific day so you may choose when to do something with it, if anything! The event offers a new way to interact with and explore the environment and game plot. Depending on what players do with it, it might be carried on in different forms in the future.

Usually the crew dreams their own dreams. This month however they will sometimes, or maybe even always, dream something strange. When they sleep they'll dream of the ocean around them, but different. Everything in the dream feels warm, alive, like all the life is dreaming along with them in a peaceful slumber. Lights shimmer and dance in this ocean to sometimes guide the crew or sometimes mislead them.

The characters' dream projections can swim without needing to breathe. They are also 'immortal' in the sense that any damage taken to them won't kill them or hurt their waking bodies. Instead they will feel the psychological effects while both awake and asleep and have trouble realizing it didn't really hurt them because of how real it feels. For the most part dream projections will be the same as a person's usual self, if probably a little fuzzier on the details given that it is still their dreaming minds. Whenever you go to sleep, your dream projection will pick up from wherever you left it last time you woke up. The good news is the crew doesn't have to be alone as this is a shared dreamscape that everyone can interact in as long as they're asleep at the same time.

Since it is a dreamscape, the crew will be able to reshape things to in a minor way, mostly subconsciously. If they're missing their favorite bed from home the seabed might shift to take that shape without them noticing. A handful of grue clusters might taste like their favorite snack. On the other hand, Cave Crawlers might look like an insect they're afraid of or something minor that always haunts their dreams might appear. It will all be small things, at least for now.

This ocean lacks any technology at all; no URSULA, no Aurora, no base, not even a strap of unnatural metal. The only thing that belongs in this ocean is life. However the dreamscape shows a different side of the ocean to see and explore. While natural areas are the same, artificial areas like the Aurora have become a field of horrors. Twisted landscapes with scars and something like screams paint a terrifying image. Anywhere that manmade products have touched looks dark and damaged in the empty places where artificial constructions are in the waking world.

As for the sea life, they too have dream projections. Most interestingly these projections can communicate with the projections of the crew, more or less talking to them. Of course, this has its own limits. For starters, it will be the projections interpreting the sea life's 'speech' in the way that seems to make most sense to their subconscious mind. One person might hear a Leviathan Reaper as a cruel but intelligible speaker while another person might hear the same Reaper as a vicious mumble in a familiar voice. Each individual dreamer will interpret a projection based on what makes the most sense to them as their minds 'translate' the alien sealife into something that their own minds can comprehend.

Of course all living things have certain personalities that will decide the frame for associations! So Reapers will never be nice to anyone, most Reefbacks are kind, Stalkers have varying opinions depending on if the person has fed them or promises to, Sand Sharks are single-minded and stupid, and so on. Animals that characters have interacted with could have picked up traits from them and will have specific relations to them based on how they've been treated. This allows players to easily NPC the sea life for their own threads if they so wish for various moods as well.

And in the distance, always, a song. Only this time, you can swim so far, you can probably reach it. The only question is if you want to.

Updates!
Many of the updates mentioned here, along with a few others, have been added to the Biome and Base posts. As mods we don't manage the player-run Subnautica discovery document but we encourage everyone to use the document for details that aren't included on the Biome and Base posts.

BASE
Lots of work was done for the base this month! While the base hadn't been 'decorated' in the strictest sense of the terms, several characters have made it less sterile with piles of books, toys, board games, and other kinds of sprucing up! Keep making the place more homey, guys!

In addition, two projects on base-improvement were started last month! A tank was built into an observatory to house a Cute Fish (Magister Snoop Dogg) and some Rabbitray friends, and work was begun on building another observatory.

TOOLS
We've modified the transportation section to include tools developed because you sure did bring back a lot this time! Salvage from the Aurora has dramatically increased supplies, especially in terms of robotic parts, seeds and fabrics.

Several new robotic suits have been added to base resources. There are also blueprints for new tools that our mechanical crew can build from! Medikits salvaged from the Aurora have been added to lab supplies along with a centrifuge.

A lot of work was done on drones this month! Multiple aquatic drones have been deployed outside the base to act as an early warning system. These are equipped with basic weaponry and a tendency to sing. The base drones have all been modified to learn since everyone was getting sick of not-tea. Now they will respond to feedback and do their best to improve every time you correct them. Of course they're still limited by resources but at least now they'll have a better chance of understanding what you want?

RESEARCH
An improved antivenom against Tiger Plant stingers has been developed! The lab will keep a stock and replace it with improved versions as they're developed. It has also been discovered that Reapers respond to Gasopod poison the way a dog responds to a bee sting. The base now has more records on the habits and behaviors of Rabbitrays and a catalogue of flora and fauna in the Safe Shallows, as well as a map of the caves in the Kelp Forest.

Several new messages gathered from Floater Island and lifepods have been added to a database of recordings from previous crew. This is kept in the lab.

TERRAFORMING
Thanks to everyone's hard efforts, Floater Island won't be floating too far away! The series of magnets set up by the characters is keeping it stable to the south of the Aurora. In addition, work has been started on setting up a farming area underwater near the base. This area will be able to grow seeds recovered from the Aurora, so keep working!

There is also a crop circle in the Grassy Plateau in the style of the Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff comics...

ANIMAL FRIENDS
Continued friendly relations with the Stalkers make them more likely to treat the crew well, though they still want treats in reward for bringing nice things. The Reefbacks continue to treat the crew kindly. Wherever they meet the Reefbacks, they will help and guide the crew and protect them from danger. The Reefback pod is smaller but has had major boosts in health and stamina.

Monthly Missions!
As before we're going to have one main mission that lets the crew work together on different parts, and one side mission that draws on extra benefits but isn't as urgent. Remember you're also free to explore and do whatever you wish and can ask us about your own mission objectives as well.

NOTE: URSULA herself has no access to dreaming so won’t be making up missions related to it. However you’re welcome to come up with plenty of missions of your own for the dreaming world!

MAIN MISSION: THE BASE
  • URSULA SAYS:"It seems the base is a little small for everyone. It also lacks proper accommodations. I believe now is a good time to focus on expanding the base to your liking since it is your home for now. Since everyone has different priorities, it may feel a bit daunting, but I'm sure group work would be possible."
  • REQUIREMENTS:In general, this would be successful as long as anyone does it. However since the guideline is very loose, what gets done is dependent on you guys. So for example, some might want to allocate resources to building up more rooms (with actual beds even? Perhaps some dividers for privacy? go wild!) while others may wish to give the lab more space. Could there be a med bay too? Who knows! It's up to you. This mission also includes any add-ons like additional power generators, decorations, home comforts or a docking bay for the seamoth.
  • RESULTS: The base will be less cramped and hopefully more cozy or at least more useful. That's definitely a great result! Especially now that the crew knows new people might arrive out of nowhere...
SIDE MISSION: HURRICANE PREP
  • URSULA SAYS: "Although it isn't hurricane season yet, we should begin considering ways to reinforce the base. My weather trackers don't go out very far so we might not have time to prepare otherwise. Though I admit I haven't protected the base before. Usually I just rebuild after it's destroyed from the wreckage of the previous base but... that wouldn't be very good for everyone else. So please consider ways to protect the base and yourselves."
  • REQUIREMENTS: To be considered successful, the crew will need to construct something to lessen the damage or stop the damage entirely that a hurricane would cause. Preparation in case the worst happens would also count. Hurricanes are actually highly damaging to the underwater landscape, so it's worth treating like any hurricane preparation. In addition, the planet produces storms of a higher intensity than those on Earth or Earth-like planets due to being mostly warm water based. Take this into consideration in your plans. Although this mission is 'official' this month, everyone is welcome to work on it up until the hurricane (sometime between July and September depending on other plot elements).
  • RESULTS: When hurricane season rolls around, the base will be much better off than how it would have been. Depending on how well the defenses work, the base could be torn apart (no defenses) or incur only minor damages (perfect defenses) or anything in between.

base reinforcement + private room making kind of

[personal profile] octoroom 2016-06-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Mission: BOTH. But most importantly, base reinforcement
Characters: Fukami + whoever!! I have an open top-level here
Details: Fukami will be doing his best to gather supplies in the Grassy Plateau + other places in order to reinforce the base on the outside because wow hurricanes underwater suck, he's lived in the sea long enough! He'll also be looking into how to build up the structural integrity of the foundations and what other ways he can make the base more substantial. WITH OR WITHOUT HELP.

Also I guess he's thinking about how big to make private rooms if they'll ever have them.
