Welcome everyone to May! With our third month in, we have another set of new arrivals. Thank you all for being so welcoming to them! We still have a few more appers coming in, so be sure to check out the OOC Introduction post. The IC introduction post will be going up shortly. Let’s hope everyone is ready for it!

As last month, we have updates based on what was done last month and two missions, a main and a side! This time, the main mission will also have a mini-event for everyone half-way through the month!

Updates!

Thanks to what you turned in for missions and what you noted on your AC posts, we have a number of updates to offer!

BIOMES
The Jelly Shroom Caves have been discovered under the Grassy Plateaus. They are currently unexplored! URSULA, however, has requested that the crew NOT explore these caves until they have better defenses. She encourages them to take on the Side Mission to accomplish this.

URSULA also notes that Floater Island will be passing by! There will be a post MAY 15th for a Floater Island mission as part of the monthly Main Mission. URSULA will be accompanying the crew on this mission to help gather information!

Lifepods have been appearing randomly in various areas overnight, as have large pieces of wreckage from the Aurora.

CREATURES
Research by characters reveals that Sand Shark armor works well against most smaller attackers and against fires. In addition, Reefbacks will now sense distress from crew members and if in the area try to defend them! It seems the crew has in general made friends with much of the ocean: Brain Corals in the current areas will warn if Stalkers are incoming by waving their weird worms around, and several Stalkers have been trained to understand the reward system and will even approach swimmers in a non-threatening way with gifts of metal or supplies on the assumption of a reward waiting for them. They may turn on swimmers if they aren’t rewarded for their efforts!

BASE
There is a new addition to the base: a Tiger Plant! This Tiger Plant in the lab will occasionally still try to fire needles at people. It's in a tank so it doesn't do any good but it is a very angry plant apparently. Watch out!

AURORA
The Aurora entrances mapped out, including the one to the storage supply room. This will make approaches to the Aurora, and exits from it, far easier to manage for those who take advantage of this knowledge! The Aurora has also been added to the list of Biomes!

FOOD
Several food missions have succeeded! Characters who want more variety can check out any of the foods added to the information on the KITCHEN section of the base page.

LIFEPOD BLACKBOX
A lifepod blackbox was discovered! If anyone goes to the lab to listen to its message, this recording play:

"This is an automated distress signal from Aurora Lifepod 17. Co-ordinates attached. Please send immediate emergency relief team" [silence followed by male voice] "You've been down too long in the midnight sea. Oh, don't you see what I mean?"

Monthly Missions!

As last month seemed to go well, we will follow the same format with one main mission that lets the crew work together on different parts, and one side mission that draws on extra benefits but isn't as urgent. We hope that this allows for more coherent efforts and are happy to work with you going forward on the best way to do missions! Remember you're also free to explore and do whatever you wish and can ask us about your own mission objectives as well.

MAIN MISSION: THOSE BEFORE YOU

• URSULA SAYS:"Recent events have me wondering about my former crew... Although I know it is likely they are dead, I want to hope they are alive and safe. If they are, they would no doubt be grateful for help from us. If they aren't... We should know what happened to them. This may protect the current crew! I have several leads that may help locate them."
• REQUIREMENTS: This mission will have two possible avenues of exploration! Crew members can visit the life pods and wreckage appearing, and must bring back whatever information they have to URSULA. She will decrypt what is found in black boxes and make it available to everyone.
  In addition, as stated earlier, on May 15th, there will be a post for Floater Island, where crew members can investigate the materials there! For this portion of the mission, we’ll be putting an OOC Questions thread within the IC Floater Island post so that you can tell us what you’re investigating and get results as you go!
• RESULTS: More information about the previous crew that may help the current crew. URSULA will be extremely grateful. In addition, any salvage found can be used by the crew. These particular missions may help the crew find more advanced synthetic materials for their work..

SIDE MISSION: DEFENSES

• URSULA SAYS: "The Reaper Leviathan... it certainly is fearsome. It is also possible it is not the apex predator of this region, though I hope I'm wrong. In order to stay safe, we need to build up weaponry and defenses. Many of you are fighters. Please, put your heads together to create something to protect yourselves."
• REQUIREMENTS: Git Gud. This mission can involve salvaging resources for weaponry or defences, designing or building said weaponry or defences, or even training fellows in how to better survive against some of the threats in the sea. Anything done to help the crew survive the ocean’s more threatening elements will work towards this
• RESULTS: Whatever you make! New armor, new weapons, or even new skills!

Main Mission: Salvage missions sound dangerous and Stork will be very Do Not Want, but he can probably be coaxed into hiding behind tagging along with someone. Whatever might get him closer to one day escaping Fish Hell and reuniting with his beloved?

Side Mission: Defenses are good. Stork likes defenses. He's good at setting traps and improvising with stuff, so maybe he can figure out something there?

Other Stuff: Once he calms down some, his tech geek pilot/mechanic/inventor side can come out to play. Only problem is, the tech he's familiar with is a bit behind the times, and also tends toward crystal-flavored magitech. Some handholding may be required to get over that initial hump.

Feferi Peixes

Intro: No top level, but I'm tagging around to people who have prompts open to older characters!

Main Mission: Feferi would like to explore some of the scattered life pods! As an aquatic creature, she's suited to going into areas that would be difficult or dangerous for someone relying on equipment to get into, and also she has very little fear so she's just in general ready to see if she can rescue anyone/find anything cool! She may explore the island, but it will depend on how things go (if it's a limited character deal, she won't be, so people who are better at land missions can shine there).

Side Mission: Feferi would be happy to help with underwater combat maneuvers! She can try to teach people how moving in the water works when you're fighting--how many options for movement are open to you, how many options for movement are open to your enemy, adjusting for how you move in the water, etc. Sort of like an extended "remember that not only do up and down not mean as much, you have to watch your up and down" lesson. If anyone's interested in that sort of thing, let me know!

Feferi Wants To Pet Rabbitrays Mission: Feferi is going to research the rabbitrays! She started on that very early on but hasn't finished that up, although she does know they're very friendly and would definitely make good pets. If anyone wants to do that with Feferi, let me know! Rabbitrays, as far as Feferi has learned so far, seem very friendly and docile, so even if your character isn't necessarily great at handling animals this should probably be fun!

Mission: Mapping the Kelp Forests
Characters: Dave Strider & Rose Lalonde
Details: Specifically they want to check out the cave system around there and will be trying to map that out. Since Dave's been informed of the Stalker training initiative and also he thinks they're cute (Dave wtf) they will have Stalker treats on them and will definitely be avoiding attacking or setting off any of the Stalkers (and Dave will kind of actively be willing to interact with any who come up, in particular - he may also try humming the song from the recording found with Ellana at a Stalker or two to see if it does anything like the recording did!). They're mostly just exploring/trying to get a working map of the caves, though! I am not sure what else you need to know we're just like wings it quietly...they work very well together, so. THERE'S THAT.

Mikleo would love to learn from Feferi re: underwater combat maneuvers if she offers; he's gotten better at them over the months here but he still struggles, especially since they keep running into new enemy-type monsters.

Also re: Rabbitrays, he's been mostly playing with them rather than researching them seriously, but he'd be down for looking into them more! He'd let her know that they respond super well to playful/cheerful telepathy and get attracted by it, since he learned that last month.

Since some characters are planning to send off the dead Reefback and also head back and physically/magically doctor the injured members of the pod, could we get an idea of how that'll go/how the Reefbacks will react/etc.?

Playing with rabbitrays totally counts as researching them, probably. I'd be totally up for the two of them doing more of that/maybe trying to actually get poison out of them without hurting them when they remember to do actual work.

And I'd be up for underwater combat maneuvers, too, of course! I'll have to see if it'll be something multiple people are interested in but I might make a post for it if they are (and if not we could do something in an inbox?).

HI I have more questions

So medical stuff. I want Don to be able to give himself and Stork (and maybe other people who ask) bloodwork. What kind of equipment exists to do that, if any? Are there any centrifuges or is he going to have to improvise/make one? Are the nanobots going to be visible under typical visual light microscopes or would he need an electron scanning microscope to see them? In his canon, there are nanobots that are visible under a visual microscope, but URSULA's may be a lot smaller and more sophisticated.

Also what about other medical tech? I know there were the portable medical instruments but I'm not quite sure how those work or if they are substitutes for standard modern-day medical tech, like CAT scanners, X-ray machines, IVs, etc.

Characters will be greeted tiredly but still warmly by the Reefbacks. Notably, the baby Reefbacks will be sticking much closer to their pod rather than come out. Any medical assistance will be met by confusion at first, until the Reefbacks understand what's being done, at which point they'll crowd around for help.

It'll become more apparent at that point how badly injured some of them were. One Reefback in particular has had most of the coral on its back torn off; this Reefback seems to be ill. Another is missing half its tentacles while yet another has had the 'horns' they use to produce their deep bellowing songs ripped off. Its song sounds distorted. Most others have open wounds that the fish that live off the coral on their backs are trying to attend to but it's obvious they can only do so much.

Although only one Reefback was seen dying, those who have become close to the pod may notice their numbers have declined more than just one.

It's a good thing the Stalkers are taking a liking to Dave in return (or is that a bad thing?) because they'll be happy to follow him when he wants, continuing to bring him and Rose metals in exchange for treats. A few bonus items will include a first aid kit in perfect condition, a bag of fruit flavored gummi treats and some sort of shiny metal goat toy that bleats when squeezed (which will startle the poor Stalker).

Humming the song will distract a Stalker. It appears to calm it and it will wait after the song has finished, though what it's waiting for is unknown and even it will seem confused when it snaps out of it. One of the Stalkers may be a little affectionate after hearing the song and bump its nose against one of their heads.

The mapping will go very well and they'll even find some deeper levels of the cave, where they'll discover a gray, lumpy egg in the midst of hatching. What pops out? Well, it's some sort of fish at least. And it'll quickly bond to Rose and Dave, chirping and clicking at them and swimming (awkwardly, since it is a newborn) around them. It will try to hide from Stalkers and Stalkers will have an interest in it as food, so if they choose to take their new baby home, they'll have to be careful.

Mission: Create Your Own: Rabbitrays!
Characters: Feferi and Mikleo
Details: Feferi and Mikleo are going to study rabbitrays! ...This mostly involves playing with them, honestly. They're going to test out talking to them with telepathy, since Mikleo said that was effective with them, and Feferi is also going to see how they respond to training! Ridiculous training, like doing simple tricks. On a more Actual Research level, they're also going to try to see if there's a way to extract poison from a Rabbitray without killing it/making it more uncomfortable than necessary. Feferi will also try to find a dead Rabbitray so the poison can be studied more clearly without hurting any of them.

Feferi would want to go with Mikleo to help patch up Reefbacks! She can't do magical healing (though she's a witch of life so she could probably learn, Feferi why didn't you focus on learning your aspect at home), but she's used to making attempts at healing creatures underwater.

Would Don like to go with Feferi to examine some lifepod wreckage? Slash possibly save people, which haha probably not, but Feferi will remain hopeful in that regard.

Yes he would! Don might not think anyone is alive himself, since statistically speaking the chances aren't great, but he would want to help anyone he could. Also, salvage metal.

As a Turtle, he's probably a decent diver, but Feferi's got him beat with her gills.

Yes, definitely! This is gonna be some weird aquatic animal-type people bonding and exploration time. Do you have any preferences for the date?

Also I'm fine with either of us doing this though I haven't filled one out before myself. Wouldn't be as sure what to put, pfft.

Eee, awesome! I think it'd be fine to do it sometime after the first IC days, like probably on the 3rd or so, because the first two would be spent with Don practically glued to whatever he can find in the lab, just figuring out as much as he can about this place. By the third day he should've calmed down a little bit.

Mission: Those Before You
Characters: Feferi and Donatello
Details: Feferi and Donatello will be checking out some of the lifepods near-ish to the Aurora! They'll be scavenging for parts they can use, black boxes, and anything else useful/amusing on Feferi's part (maybe LIVING CREW MEMBERS okay probably not). Between the two of them they should be able to haul most things back, but if they come across anything particularly difficult to take back that would be useful they'll borrow the Seamoth and come back!
